A CHECKOUT-COST WORKED EXAMPLE

The lower sticker price can cost more.

Compare the amount due now for the exact same item, then check delivery and returns before choosing. A future reward is a separate benefit, not money removed from today's bill. Leave an unverified charge blank in the calculator above; zero means you have checked that the charge is zero.

Try these fictional quotes

Imagine two sellers offering the same new, single-item model and color. These numbers demonstrate the tool; they are not live prices, retailer offers or evidence of savings.

  1. Offer A: item $68 + shipping $9 + tax $6 + required extras $0 − usable discount $0 = $83 due now.
  2. Offer B: item $75 + shipping $0 + tax $6 + required extras $0 − usable discount $0 = $81 due now.

Enter those amounts above and confirm the same-variant checkbox only because the example specifies an identical item and condition. B costs $2 less at checkout despite its $7 higher sticker price. That comparison says nothing yet about which seller is dependable or whether delivery meets your deadline.

Compare the bill, then the conditions1Offer A: 68 + 9 + 6 = 83Item + shipping + tax; no applied discount.2Offer B: 75 + 0 + 6 = 81Same exact item and condition in this example.3Difference now: 83 − 81 = 2Future credit stays separate from today’s payment.
Fictional arithmetic from the worked example. This is not a retailer offer or a verified saving.

Keep three decisions separate

  • Money due now: count a coupon only after it actually applies to this basket. Include a necessary accessory or other required charge under extra cost. A free-shipping threshold that needs an unwanted purchase is not automatically a saving.
  • Possible future value: if A also promises $10 in store credit for a later order, its current bill is still $83. Record the credit, expiry and restrictions separately. Do not enter it as a $10 usable discount.
  • Cost if you return it: record any return-shipping or restocking charge as a conditional cost, not a charge everyone pays today. A cheaper checkout can still be a poor fit when the return window or delivery date does not work for you.

Save only a public product link and your own non-sensitive notes. Keep payment details, addresses and private checkout links out of shared notes. The comparison calculator does not preserve your quotes after this tab closes.

Use the next tool that matches the question

Record the chosen item in My Deal List, check included pieces with bundle math, or use the subscription total-cost guide when renewal charges matter. Prefer paper? Use the printable shopping starter. These resources do not require a purchase.

Source and limits

The FTC's Online Shopping guide (May 2023; checked October 19, 2026) supports checking product details, the full cost, delivery and return terms. The worked example and evidence note above are our editorial tools. The calculator does not verify sellers, stock, prices or coupons, and a lower total is not a recommendation to buy.
